Plot Selection for New Homes
Homelessness is no longer a reality for the Batwa of Kanaba. After a series of meetings introducing them to the rammed earth technology, the community members now have the knowledge they need to build their own homes. The community cheered when they received a map of their land for each family to choose the plot where they will set up their house. Of course, friends selected neighboring plots!
It’s a great joy to witness the families rebuilding their lives one step at a time.
Establishment of a Medicinal Forest
Another step the Batwa have taken in making Kanaba their home is the establishment of a medicinal forest. For generations, they relied on the natural forest for its healing herbs. These trees were remedies but also part of their heritage, their way of life - and they haven’t forgotten.
Thirty-four community members joined hands to plant the medicinal forest, with species like Terminalia, Cordia, Polycius fulva, Macamia lutia, Croton, Calliandra, and Venolia. Together, they are ensuring that their culture is carried on in their new home in Kanaba.
